    Liberian government donates to Monrovia Central Prison Compound ahead of Independent Day celebration

    The Vice President of the Republic of Liberia His Excellency Jeremiah Kpahn Koung has made a donation of verities of food and non-food items to inmates at the Monrovia Central Prison compound in Monrovia, Liberia.

    Held on the grounds of the Monrovia Central Prison Compound, the ceremony was witnessed by the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Liberia, correction officers of the Prison compound and the Liberian media.

    Hundred bags of 25kg rice, seven containers of oil, ten cartoon of fish among others items were presented in different quantities to correction officers assigned at the facility.

    Making the presentation Vice President Koung noted that the provision was made available through the office of the President of Liberia His Excellency, Joseph Nyumah Boakai who Sr. could not attend the ceremony due to national engagement.

    According to the vice president, the donation was intended to buttress the efforts of staffs assigned at the facility in ensuring that the decency of the prison compound remain a top priority and to give it a face lift. He also maintained that the gesture will help address the issue of food shortages at the facility especially ahead of the country’s 177th independent day celebration that is expected to kick off on July 26, 2024.

    Following the presentation, the vice president was escorted to tour the entire prison compound where he viewed the different departments that host over one thousand five hundred (1,500) inmates at the facility.

    From his observation, the vice president described the prison compound as a different environment and called for the need to improve the current status of the facility.

    He promised to recommend to president Boakai the need to revisit the Monrovia Central Prison Compound and counter check documents attached to the names of inmates who have been detained at the facility for several years.
